A woman from Utah died four days after getting the second dose of the Moderna Wuhan coronavirus vaccine. Surgical technologist Kassidi Kurill from Ogden got vaccinated on Feb. 1 as part of her job. She experienced discomfort on the morning of Feb. 4 and asked her father to drive her to the hospital. Kurill was subsequently confined, where she died of multiple organ failure Feb. 5.
The 39-year-old did not experience a serious reaction after her first dose of the vaccine, only getting a sore arm on the injection site. Her family said she did not hesitate to volunteer for the vaccine. Kurill’s father Alfred Hawley remarked: “She was absolutely fine with getting it. In fact, she told all of us ‘it’s fine, you guys should all get it.'”
Kurill’s older sister Kristin, who lives in Arizona, meanwhile said her sister described getting the second COVID-19 vaccine dose as normal. She added that they were not worried about Kassidi as “everyone from her work had flu-like symptoms, so we thought that was normal.” Kristin continued: “They had gone shopping. She was fine, then [she] started feeling not so great that evening.”
Kurill was in bed two days after she received the Moderna jab, but she started complaining of pain on the morning of Feb. 4. She asked her father to drive her to a local emergency room. Kurill started vomiting as soon as they arrived. Doctors then peppered Hawley with questions about what happened, where he replied that she got her second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“[Doctors] did a blood test, and immediately came back. [They] said she was very, very sick, and her liver was not functioning,” Hawley said. The retired fighter pilot waited in the ER with Kurill’s nine-year-old daughter, aware that they were not going home any time soon. He commented: “It was a total shock, and I was even afraid to tell my wife.”
Kristin was also aware that her sister had gone to the hospital. She assumed that Kassidi would be back home in an hour after getting intravenous therapy with fluids, but this was not the case.
Kurill was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, located south of Ogden. Doctors believed a liver transplant was the best option for her survival, with her parents even stepping forward as organ donors. Medical professionals did their best efforts to stabilize Kurill, but in vain. According to Hawley, her daughter’s liver, kidney and heart shut down.
Kurill’s father said her death did not make any sense. “She was healthy, happy and active … and then she was so sick that, in less than 12 hours, [she was] intubated and on life support.” Her family supported this by saying she had no medical conditions.
Kurill’s family agreed to an autopsy as recommended by doctors. Her body was sent to the Utah State Medical Examiner in Taylorsville, where a full autopsy was performed. Kurill’s family is aware that they may never know what actually caused Kassidi’s death, but they expressed hope that the autopsy will give them the answers they need.
Fox News later reported the findings of the autopsy. According to Utah Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Erik Christensen, the surgical technologist’s second vaccine dose and her death were only “temporally related.” He explained: “We don’t have any evidence that there are connections between the vaccines and deaths at this point.”
Hawley commented that Kurill “was healthy and good” before taking the shot. Thus, he believes that “there was something in the shot” that claimed his daughter’s life until he gets other data – following the principle of Occam’s razor where “the simplest answer is mostly likely correct.” (Related: Woman suffers whole body convulsions after taking experimental Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.)
Meanwhile in Portugal, the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech also claimed the life of a mother and health worker. Abilio Acevedo lamented the death of his daughter Sonia Acevedo, who passed away on Jan. 1. The medical worker assigned to a government hospital in the northern coastal city of Porto got vaccinated against COVID-19 in late December 2020.
Abilio said he received a call informing him that his daughter was found dead on the morning of New Year’s Day. He added that they even ate together the night before, remarking that his “daughter left home and I never saw her alive again.” The elder Acevedo told Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã: “She had the COVID-19 vaccine, but she didn’t have any symptoms. I don’t know what happened. I just want answers: I want to know what led to my daughter’s death.” (Related: Health professional dies two days after COVID-19 vaccination.)
