The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) experienced the side effects of the Wuhan coronavirus vaccine. NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said he was “knocked out” for an entire day after receiving the second dose of Moderna’s jab. He described his experience following the second dose as “a little achy” and “chilly,” but clarified that he was not sick.
Fauci made the remarks during a Jan. 22 White House press briefing. Responding to a question whether he had already taken the COVID-19 booster shot, he answered: “I was hoping that I wouldn’t get too knocked out. I did for about 24 hours. Now I’m fine.” The top infectious disease doctor added he received his booster shot on Jan. 19, which was 28 days after he received the first dose on live television Dec. 22.
The health expert joined the ranks of other officials and high-profile personalities who received the Wuhan coronavirus vaccine, broadcast on television to encourage Americans to get theirs. These officials include President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence. Former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton also received vaccinations on live television.
Meanwhile, it is unclear whether former President Donald Trump was vaccinated for COVID-19 behind closed doors. He contracted COVID-19 in early October 2020, but subsequently recovered after treatment.
The fatigue, aches and chills Fauci experienced are the most common side effects of the vaccines made by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech. Others also experienced headaches, another common side effect. But the health expert nevertheless reminded Americans that the side effects were not illnesses caused by the vaccine. Rather, these were signs that the immune system is ramping itself up to fend off the virus.
No deaths have been conclusively linked to the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines as of writing. However, surveys showed that Americans were concerned about the rushed vaccine development or possible side effects that may be worse than the disease it aims to prevent. Clinical trials showed that both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna shots demonstrated more than 90 percent efficacy rates.
About 55 percent of people who got the Moderna mRNA vaccine during clinical trials reported side effects after the first dose. Moreover, 80 percent of people who received the Moderna jab reported side effects after the booster dose. Thus, doctors warned Americans to be prepared for any adverse reactions they may experience.
Dozens of Americans who claim to have taken part in trials for both Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines alleged that the second dose of the mRNA vaccines caused significant side effects. Among the adverse reactions they reported included being fatigued for an entire day and developing high fevers. Indiana nursing home employee Shawn Skelton was among those who experienced a serious reaction to the vaccine. She suffered uncontrollable shaking and tongue spasms after being vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine, just like Fauci. The adverse reactions appeared three days following immunization, her fiance Rich Vidiella said.
Health workers were given top priority under the current immunization program. However, health authorities were surprised as a majority of health workers rejected the coronavirus vaccine. Some 60 percent of health care workers in the state of Ohio initially turned down the vaccine. A veterans home in Illinois said 80 percent of its staff refused vaccinations for COVID-19.
Vaccine hesitancy threatens to undermine the critical rollout of vaccines, more so when it comes from people in the medical field. Health workers themselves have reservations when it comes to the coronavirus jab following reports of serious reactions and post-vaccination deaths. Florida obstetrician Gregory Michael died 16 days after being vaccinated against the Wuhan coronavirus. The 56-year-old Miami doctor died of a hemorrhagic stroke after developing a rare autoimmune disease which prevented blood clotting. Michael’s wife Heidi Neckelmann said his death “was 100 percent linked to the vaccine.”
Meanwhile, Portuguese nurse Sonia Acevedo passed away Jan. 1, two days after being vaccinated against COVID-19. The 48-year-old mother of two did not report any adverse effects following immunization. Acevedo’s daughter Vania Figueredo said her mother had only complained about discomfort in the area where she was injected.
